This project position is funded through the Save America's Treasures
grant program.  Reporting to the Director of Conservation Services,
the Project Conservator will be the primary conservator of the
Edward E. Ayer American Indian History Collection for the period of
the grant. The Ayer collection includes books, papers, parchment,
photographs and other materials produced over the last five hundred
years.  Treatments will include media consolidation, paper and
parchment stabilization, binding repair and rehousing.

Responsibilities: Assist the Director of Conservation Services in
prioritization of treatments; specify and perform treatment after
consultation with curators; document treatment using digital camera
and database; train and supervise 2-3 technicians and interns in
work associated with the Ayer project; all other tasks or activities
needed for the achievement of departmental and project goals.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree in
conservation or its equivalent required; experience treating and
rehousing vellum, flat paper, books and photographs; knowledge of
conservation theory and practice for books and papers; ability to
work independently and as part of a team;  FileMaker Pro database
experience preferred.

Schedule: Full time, 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday,
occasional evening assignments.  Grant sponsored, exempt position
ending August 31, 2002.
