Monofilament line

Does anyone have any information regarding the decay or 'life-span'
of monofilament line, a.k.a. fishing line; uses in the past include
hanging artefacts in display cases, securing of mounted artefacts,
security lines.

I am specifically interested in the load bearing properties over
time and failure due to knots and other friction/stress points.

Anecdotal information as well as research references would be
appreciated.
