Updates: Library Binding Institute and "New Library Scene": Jim Larsen, president of the Library Binding Institute and owner of Bridgeport National Bindery Company will report on developments with the library binder's trade organization and publication. LARS binding software: The rumors of it's demise are false. 3. Discussion topic: Deferred Binding What factors determine the decision to bind softcover monographs? Are they based on hard data, tradition, or intuition? What research has been done to support deferred binding and how have academic libraries modified their binding programs in light of the evidence? Andrew Hart, Preservation Librarian at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will summarize research he has done on this topic and what UNC has done to revise their binding policy. Brian Baird, Preservation Librarian from the University of Kansas will be on hand to discuss findings of a KU collection survey and its implications for acquisitions and commercial binding.
