1. Announcements

2. Updates:

Library Binding Institute and "New Library Scene": Jim Larsen,
president of the Library Binding Institute and owner of
Bridgeport National Bindery Company will report on developments
with the library binder's trade organization and publication.

LARS binding software: The rumors of it's demise are false.

3. Discussion topic: Deferred Binding

What factors determine the decision to bind softcover
monographs? Are they based on hard data, tradition, or
intuition? What research has been done to support deferred
binding and how have academic libraries modified their binding
programs in light of the evidence?

Andrew Hart, Preservation Librarian at the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill, will summarize research he has done on
this topic and what UNC has done to revise their binding policy.
Brian Baird, Preservation Librarian from the University of
Kansas will be on hand to discuss findings of a KU collection
survey and its implications for acquisitions and commercial
    binding.
