Tradition and Conservation: The Japanese Experience 7th International course on Japanese paper conservation November 26-December 17, 2000 Tokyo, Japan Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Property (NRICP) International Centre for the study of the preservation and restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) Agency for Cultural Affairs - Japan In Japan, paper making and paper objects are an integral part of the living heritage. The paper conservation practice is rooted in this long and rich tradition. Through this course, participants will have the rare opportunity to explore a range of conservation techniques in the very context in which they grew and flourish today. The programme will include practical sessions, complemented with lectures and demonstrations at the TNRICP, Tokyo. Special attention will be given this year to problems raised by the conservation of wall papers. Course activities include visits to museums, restoration workshops and traditional paper manufacturers in Tokyo and other parts of Japan. Study tours to major historical centers and sites in Japan aim at further illustrating the relationship between the role of cultural heritage today and the approaches to its conservation. The number of participants is limited to 12. The course is designed for paper conservator-restorers working with museum collections, archives or libraries of national relevance. At least 3 years of practical experience is required. Lecturers are Japanese and international specialists in the field of conservation.
