The Canadian Conservation Institute is interested in hearing about
experiences of conservators and collection managers who have had to
deal with the problem of cleaning and preserving fire-damaged
materials, especially soot-covered or lightly charred materials, and
in particular, book collections with historic bindings (leather
bound as well as pyroxyline and starch coated cloth bindings). As
well, if anyone has any samples of soot covered or fire-damaged
books or other materials to donate to the CCI, this would be greatly
appreciated, as samples are needed to further our research on this
subject. Please contact
