The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard
University is seeking applicants to fill a one-year full-time
assistant conservator position.  60% of this position's time will be
dedicated to an IMLS-supported grant project.  Responsibilities will
include examination, documentation, treatment, and re-housing of a
selection of nineteenth and twentieth century African wood masks,
figurines, and composite objects.  The remaining 40% of this
position's time will focus on general conservation efforts,
including object conservation for exhibitions and loans, completion
of rehousing/restorage effort for paintings and oversized works of
art on paper, and possibly conducting conservation/condition surveys
of objects in storage for planning.  The assistant conservator will
work collaboratively with the head conservator, ethnographic
collections manager, and project conservation technician.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a graduate degree from
recognized program in objects conservation emphasizing ethnographic
materials or equivalent apprenticeship experience.  Essential skills
and background include experience designing and constructing special
supports and housings for three-dimensional objects; knowledge of
pest management and pest control measures; prior conservation
experience with wood, leather, and fiber; good problem solving
skills and an ability to maintain focus in a busy lab;  excellent
organizational, planning, and communication skills; ability to write
technical reports and to formulate treatment plans;  ability to
assess job performance and meet project goals. Supervisory
experience beneficial.
