Subject: Palm leaf manuscripts
Ms. Gillian Boal of UC Berkeley Library Preservation Department asked about the conservation of palm leaf manuscripts. Following information is what I can provide. I and Mr. Masayosi Kuba, conservator of the National Diet Library, Tokyo have worked with the staff of the National Library of Indonesia to house more than one thousand rare books and manuscripts of that library in 1991-1992. Most of them are palm leaf documents. Mr. Kuba revisited the National Library of Indonesia this year and found these materials are in good condition. Mr. Anupam Sah, conservator and the Coordinator of the INTACH ICI Orissa Art Conservation Center in India, has been organizing four months intensive training course in conservation of palm leaf manuscripts. He has a very knowledge of the conservation treatment of palm leaf documents.
