Subject: Colloquium on silver tarnishing
SILPROT / Scottish Society for Conservation and Restoration Silver Tarnishing - Causes and Prevention One-Day Colloquium Thursday 15th June 2000, University of Glasgow SILPROT is a European Commission-funded research project designed to investigate ways of protecting silver collections from tarnishing. The components of the research programme, which is being carried out in three locations, are: to evaluate sealed polymer pouches for storage of silver (ICN, Amsterdam), to quantify the pollutant gases which cause tarnishing (Oxford Brookes University) and to prepare and test new absorbents for reducing tarnishing in display cases (Glasgow University). A one-day colloquium is being organised by SILPROT, in association with SSCR, at which results of the research to date will be outlined. The aim is to provide a discussion forum for conservators, curators and conservation scientists in order to explore current approaches to the display and storage of silver collections. The morning session will focus on the results of the first two years' research in Amsterdam, Oxford and Glasgow on three important fundamental topics: * the quantification of pollution concentrations by means of passive samplers, * the production and testing of new pollution absorbents for the reduction of tarnishing in display cases, * the testing of clear plastic barrier film enclosures for reduction of silver tarnishing in storage. The afternoon session will be a brainstorming forum to discuss relevant issues such as: the pros and cons of lacquering, the relevance of pollution monitoring for tarnish control, the choice of absorbents and how they should be used, the financial costs of preventive conservation of silver.
