Subject: Internship at Peabody Essex Museum
Summer Intern Peabody Essex Museum The Asian export art department seeks an individual to coordinate the rehousing of the department's collection of 2000 works on paper from China, Japan, and India. Approximately 65% of the collection is presently housed inadequately. This project involves a preliminary survey and photodocumentation of the collections, interleaving with acid-free paper, mat cutting (where appropriate), and construction of encasements or supports for more fragile materials. The intern will work independently on this project. However, T.K. McClintock, a private paper conservator in Somerville, MA will provide a day of supervision at the beginning of the internship. Will Phippen, Deputy Director of Collections, Conservation, and Publications at the Peabody Essex Museum (who trained as an objects conservator) will be available for limited supervision throughout the duration of the internship. Asian export art department staff will supervise the intern's daily progress. Qualifications: College or graduate-level work (or equivalent) in conservation or art history. The ability to work independently is a must. This internship comes with a stipend of $1,500. The internship would ideally run from June 14th to August 18th.
