The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation conservation department is seeking an associate conservator of metals and arms. This is a regular full-time exempt position with a hiring rate of $26,303 - $35,100. Duties: Supervises the operation of the metals laboratory. Carries out examinations of metals and arms, prepares proposals, carries out conservation treatments and writes treatment reports. Monitors environmental conditions and their effect upon the condition of objects and recommends appropriate actions. Supervises and instructs subordinates. Researches and develops new conservation treatments. Minimum Qualifications: Extensive knowledge of and experience in conserving metals of the 16th to early 20th century. Experience in preparing reports and working with documentation. Knowledge of art history. Experience in museum and archive administration. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written including professional presentation. All of the above generally gained through an advanced degree in conservation, knowledge of chemistry, physics, art history, history and connoisseurship, OR the equivalent professional experience and five years professional experience working independently on complex projects. Note: Supervisory experience and membership in a professional conservation or related society and metalworking/fabrication skills are pluses.
