Book Conservator (GS-1001-09 or 11) Salary -
$35,310-$55,541 per annum

Duties: Undertakes conservation treatments of bound and unbound
Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) collections characterized by
historical significance, rarity, value, and the occasional presence
of complex technical problems. Performs preliminary chemical and
analytical examination. Conservation treatments may include;
disbinding to preserve bibliographic integrity of the object;
aqueous and non-aqueous treatments; use of binocular microscope;
flattening, humidifying and lining; tape/adhesive removal, stain
reduction; disinfestation; surface cleaning; sewing, endband
construction and board attachment; covering of repairing using
paper, cloth, leather, vellum and alum-tawed materials; lettering in
foil and/or leaf; hinging and matting; and the construction of
protective enclosures. Completes photo and written documentation.
Develops treatment proposal and justification in consultation with
senior-level conservator. Works with senior-level conservator and
department head to set priorities for the conservation unit. Assists
in preparation of books and materials for exhibition or
digitization. Ensures that environmental data is collected; reviews
data; and works with SIL and SI staff to provide optimal
environmental conditions for SIL collections. Assesses incoming
general collections materials selected for preservation treatment.
Adapts or develops new repair techniques and provides limited staff
training. Monitors workflow, quality of work, and maintains
statistics. Actively participates in SIL's emergency response and
recovery program. Assists in training of SIL staff in sound
preservation practices; serves as resource person for SIL and SI
staff, and the general public on the conservation and preservation
of library materials.

Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of current conservation
principles and practice, books and paper history, materials, and
construction. Knowledge of principles and practices of rare book
conservation and demonstrated application of book conservation
treatment skills to rare books in a recognized conservation
facility. Ability to manage and provide technical supervision for
general collections conservation or collections environment program,
conservation supporting exhibition or digitization programs.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of library and information
science.
