Subject: European Preventive Conservation Strategy
Project Announcement: European Preventive Conservation Strategy Five organisations recently received funding from the European Commission, Raphael Programme, for the project "European Preventive Conservation Strategy". The objective is to produce an agreed document on preventive conservation strategy for Europe. The strategy document is intended to assist ministries of culture, museums and institutions to justify, plan and implement preventive conservation services. It will include potential for planning and action at the international level. To produce the strategy document, participants from 23 European countries and 7 international organisations will meet in Vantaa, Finland on September 21 and 22, 2000. The participants will be representatives of ministries of responsible for museums, and directors of museums and conservation services. They will be from both European Union and non-Union nations. To prepare for the meeting the participants from each country will propose five themes of action that should be included in a conservation strategy, based on their national experience. ICCROM has completed a Preventive Conservation Survey of European Museums and Services, which will contribute useful starting data. The Survey looks at structures to help preventive conservation in museums, such as legislation, training programmes, advisory services, research, and publications. The strategy document and all the background materials gathered during the project will be published on paper and on the web. The main languages will be English and French, but the meeting participants will also publish the strategy in the language of their countries (23 in total). The co-organisers of the project are the International Centre for the Study of the Restoration and Conservation of Cultural Property (ICCROM), the EVTEK Institute - Department of Conservation Studies (Finland), Instituto Jose de Figueiredo (Portugal), Ministry of Cultural Heritage (Hungary), and Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des musees de France.
