Microbiological activity seems to be one of those unavoidable
problems with PEG solutions.  See the following article for ideas
and for many good references:

The people at the Mary Rose seem to be doing a lot of work on this
subject. Also, there are some articles in the ICOM-WOAM (Waterlogged
Organic Archaeological Materials) publications.
