Leather as a Covering Material
Interim Meeting of the ICOM-CC
Leathercrafts and Related Objects
Vic, Spain, 18-20 October 2000

The interim meeting of the ICOM-CC Leather group will be held at the
Museu de l'Art de la Pell, in Vic (located north of Barcelona),
Spain, from 18 to 20 October 2000. The meeting will consist of two
days of talks with one day for visits to historical leather
collections in Vic and the surrounding area in Catalonia.

The general theme for the talks will be the discussion of leather as
a covering material, as this will be common to many of the
conservation concerns of the group: in bookbinding; in upholstery;
in waterproofed protective coverings on carriages and other
vehicles; in decorative coverings for chests and caskets, shields
and scabbards; in inlay on tables and desks; and in decorative and
gilt leather used as covers in cushions and on furniture. We would
like to include other talks, which may not necessarily fit into this
theme but which are of interest to active members of the group,
including leather excavated from dry archaeological sites as well as
skin and fur garments.

The presentations will cover three main areas which will interest
conservators and scientists as well as curators and art historians:
conservation (preventive and remedial), research into deterioration
and the development of treatments, historical and technological
studies.

Call For Papers:

Presentations covering the following topics are welcomed :

    * historical and technological studies of leather crafting and
        manufacture
    *   preventive conservation
    *   remedial conservation
    *   identification of materials
    * development and evaluation of treatments
    *   evaluation of degradation
    * specific problems of composite objects (leather and
        metal/wood/textile/lacquer))
    * specific problems of artefacts made of skin or fur
    * conservation of dry archaeological leather
