The Vatican Secret Archives are the central of source archival
material  of the Holy See. They were established officially in 1610
and collect some of the most important records related with the
history of Europe from the Middle Ages up to now.

The  Restoration and bookbinding workshop, which  is responsible for
the conservation and preservation of the records, is seeking a
conservator. The postholder will work together the staff involved in
several activities from modern bookbinding to conservation.

The postholder will work under the direction of the responsible of
the workshop at the lower end of the band but after a training period
(at least one year) he would be promoted further up the band at
discretion of the responsible of the workshop.

The duties involve both theoretical and practical skills of the
conservation and restoration profession, including full treatments
of archival, paper and parchment material, self management to plan
and organise his own work and maintenance of the records.

Person Specification:

    *   being Roman Catholic

    *   English and/or French and/or German and/or Spanish language
        knowledge

    *   a recognised conservation qualification

    *   specific knowledges about:  ink corrosion, parchment and
        paper restoration, book and single sheets documents
        restoration, handmade and industrial bookbinding

    *   general knowledges about: conservation, restoration, basic
        chemistry, environment control

    *   optional skill: seal restoration

Curriculum needed: Italian language knowledge is not necessary.
Position funded for 3 years (renewable).

Preferences: more qualifications (knowledge of Latin language,
previous experiences in the field of conservation and preservation,
knowledge of computer etc.)  will be considered.

Timetable: 36 hours per week, excluding meal breaks, from Monday to
Saturday (6 hours per day from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 pm).

Probation: 12 month probation period applies.

Holydays: 26 days per year plus public holydays.

Treatment according the "Regolamento generale della Curia Romana"
(General Rules of the Roman Curia).

Salary: LIT. 30.000.000 (minimum)
