The conservation of the Perush ha Torah Newberry Library 60 W. Walton Street, Chicago January 20, 2000 6 pm The Newberry Library invites CACG for a lecture on the first book ever printed in Lisbon and a tour of the conservation laboratory Join Susan Russick, Director of Conservation Services at the Newberry Library, for a presentation on the treatment of the Perush ha Torah, the first book ever printed in Lisbon. The 15th century manuscript was written in Hebrew by one of the founders of the Kabbalah, Moses ben Nachmann. This copy is particularly interesting because of the quantity of annotations and the presence of a manuscript section in the book. The volume was badly damaged by mold, insects and previous restoration. The treatment involved disbinding, washing, removing previous mends, mending of the manuscript pages and rebinding in a historically sympathetic manner. Susan Russick holds an MSLIS in Conservation of Library and Archival Materials from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to her position at the Newberry Library she worked and interned at the Library of Congress and at several Smithsonian Institution museums. Dan Paterson and Vasar Rastonis are interns at the Newberry Library who have both contributed to the Perush ha Torah project. They join Ms. Russick in presenting their work to CACG. Please joins us.
