SOLINET, Inc., The Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
introduce our Winter 2000 preservation workshop schedule:

Digital Imaging: Preservation Issues

    The increase in digital imaging projects for library and
    archival collections raises many issues related to selection,
    resource allocation, and long-term access (preservation). This
    two-day workshop provides an introduction to the technology of
    digital imaging and addresses the following questions: What
    collections or resources area appropriate for digital
    conversion? How will digital files be maintained? Who is
    responsible for ensuring future access to this digital
    information? Is future access necessary? Is future access
    necessary? Through lecture, discussion and case studies
    participants will gain the tools needed to make informed
    decisions about imaging project planning.

    The instructors are Faye Phillips, Assistant Dean of Libraries
    for Special Collections, Louisiana State University, and Charles
    Thomas, Special Collections/ Archives Technical Services
    Librarian, University of Minnesota Libraries.

    The two-day workshop will be held at the Interamerican
    University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, PR on Thursday-Friday,
    February 3-4, 2000 from 9am - 4pm.

    Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180 late
    registration); $215 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK. ($205 early
    bird, $240 late registration). Any institution within Puerto
    Rico qualifies for the member rate.

Intermediate Book Repair

    This two-day hands-on workshop is designed to hone repair skills
    learned in Fundamentals of Book Repair. Participants are able to
    participate more advanced techniques for general collections
    repair as well as construct enclosures for special collections.

    Discussion addresses treatment decision making, properties of
    adhesives, and managing a book repair operation.

    Participants in SOLINET's Fundamentals of Book Repair workshop
    is preferred for registration. Otherwise, provide a written
    statement describing book repair skill level. Instructors are
    Christine Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation Education Officer and
    Tina Mason, SOLINET Preservation Field Services Officer.

    The workshop will be held on Tuesday-Wednesday, February 8-9,
    2000 from 8:30 am - 5 pm at the Columbia Theological Seminary,
    Decatur, Georgia.

    Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180 late
    registration); $215 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($205 early
    bird, $240 late registration).  Any institution within Georgia
    qualifies for the member rate.

Environmental Control and Monitoring

    The most cost-effective strategy to preserve our documentary
    resources is by controlling temperatures, relative humidity, and
    pollutants. This workshop will help library staff identify the
    source of problems, monitor the environment, and develop
    strategies for affecting change in their institution. It will
    include an extensive packet of resource materials, plus exhibits
    of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment.

    Instructor is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of Chicora
    Foundation.

    This one-day workshop will be held on Friday, March 10, 2000 at
    Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia.

    Cost is $95 SOLINET members ($85 early bird, $120 late
    registration), $135 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($125 early
    bird, $160 late registration). Any institution within Virginia
    qualifies for the member rate.

Did Our Insurance Policy Say That? Risk Management

    For Library and Cultural Collections.  This full day workshop
    discusses risk management techniques for libraries and cultural
    collections. Through lecture, discussion and breakout sessions
    the following topics will be highlighted:  valuation of
    collections; types of property insurance coverage; insuring
    specific materials; choosing an insurance agent; appraisal.

    The instructor for this workshop is Jeanne Drewes, Assistant
    Director for Access and Preservation, Michigan State University
    Libraries. Guest Presenters from allied fields will participate
    in breakout sessions.

    The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, March 15th, 2000 from
    9am - 4pm at East Carolina University, Greenville, North
    Carolina.

    Cost is $95 SOLINET members ($85 early bird, $120 late
    registration); $135 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($125 early
    bird, $160 late registration). Any institution within North
    Carolina qualifies for the member rate.

Disaster Preparedness and Recovery

    Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters
    ranging from fires and flooding to roof leaks and mold
    outbreaks. Through lecture, demonstrations, and a hands-on
    recovery exercise, this one and a half-day workshop will provide
    the training necessary to plan, organize and execute a disaster
    plan and salvage operation.

    The instructors for this session are J. Sara Paulk, Assistant
    Director/Head Librarian, Tifton County Public Library and Vicki
    Stanton, Preservation Librarian, University of North Florida.

    This 1 & 1/2 day workshop is scheduled for Thursday - Friday,
    March 28-29, 2000 from 9am-4pm Day 1 and 9am-12pm Day 2 at
    University of North Florida, Jacksonville, FL.

    Cost is $135 SOLINET members ($125 early bird, $160 late
    registration); $175 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($165 early
    bird, $200 late registration). Any institution within Florida
    qualifies for the member rate.
