I'm doing a research for a master project on Graphic technics used
in paintings (on canvas). The aim of the project:

    * To give a historical presentation of all different graphic
techniques used in in paintings (and related works).

    * To give a description of the techniques, and materials. How
the techniques have been (and are) used. How the materials
interact and interfere with the; varnish, paint layer,
        ground layer, and canvas.

    * To explain and describe specific problems (and how to solve
them), related to these kind of works, in preservation,
        conservation and restauration.

Graphic technics used in Paintings are a subject seldom described,
in the world of Conservation. Because of the traditional division of
paintings conservation and graphic conservation. But especially in
the 20th century, all kinds of different graphic technics, are used
as an integrated part in the modern painting. Furthermore, the use
of different graphic technics used in paintings can be perceived
further back in time: In the late 17th century methods have been
described for transferring prints to, among other supports, canvas.
In the 19th century pre-printed (either by stencil or block-print
methods) canvas hangings were produced and later hand-painted.
Almost since the invention of the photographic technique, canvas has
been used for the support of the photographic emulsion, and
sometimes further hand-painted. Since the patent description of
serigraphy (silkscreen print), also this technique has been used in
paintings, especially in the 60's Pop art.

In our digital age, different digital printing techniques can be
used for the printing of a canvas. These printed canvases are used
by contemporary artists for further hand-decoration or as they
appear from the printer, as pieces of art.

Does anyone have a knowledge of any kind of graphic techniques used
in paintings (or on canvas) ?.

Does anyone have any case-histories of the conservation,
restauration and preservation of these kinds of works?.
