Diploma Course in Marine Archaeological
Conservation
Starting September 4, 2000

An 80 credit (120 ECTS) diploma is being offered in Marine
Archaeological Conservation at the Department of Conservation
Studies, EviTech Institute of Art and Design, Vantaa, Finland,
starting September 4, 2000 and finishing on December 24, 2001.

The course is being offered in English by experienced conservators /
scientists on topics such as:

    In situ conservation of shipwrecks
    Packing and storage methods for underwater finds
    Underwater documentation
    Materials and environmental analyses
    Conservation treatments of waterlogged wood, leather, textile,
    metals, ceramics, glass, composites
    Underwater archaeology
    Underwater environment
    Scuba Diving
    Research Project

A 10 credit (15 ECTS) internship will be part of the programme.

The program is being funded by the Finnish government to promote the
conservation of underwater shipwrecks.  Many are found well
preserved in the Baltic sea as, for example, the recent discovery of
the 1771 Vrouw Maria wreck off the Finnish coast. 15 candidates from
Finland and abroad will be selected for this specialised program.

International lecturers, such as Dr. Ian MacLeod (Australia), Dr.
David Grattan and Cliff Cook (Canada), Dr. Christian Degrigny
(France), Dr. Per Hoffman (Germany), Dr. Vasilike Argyropoulos, Dr.
Vasilis Kilikoglou, and Alice Paterakis (Greece), Dr. Andras Morgos
(Hungary), will teach.  Lecturers from Finland will include for
example Dr. Boris Winterhalter and Dr. Tuuli Timonen.
