Subject: Storing automobile
This enquiry is placed on behalf of a custodian without access to the list. A brand new automobile is to be placed in a huge vault below ground where the plan is to seal it away till the year 3001. As I understand it conservators are applying a protective wax based preservative coating over the entire bodywork in an effort to reduce any damage whilst in the vault. The custodian is however concerned that whilst the vault itself may be free of all light and maintained at a constant temperature some dampness however slight could seep through the walls and into the vaulted area. Might a protective plastic or otherwise bubble-like structure be used to encapsulate the car and would such a structure last 1000 years in such an environment. Alternatively can anyone suggest something else that might be used to reduce damp attack in such an unusual environment. Mark G.
