Gerrit Dou

From: Jorgen Wadum <wadum.j>

Currently the conservation department at The Royal Cabinet of
Paintings Mauritshuis is making research into the materials and
technique of Dutch 17th century still life and genre paintings. Of
particular interest is the technique of the Leiden 'fine-painters',
and specifically that of Gerrit Dou (1613-1675).

It is known that Dou in some of his paintings used not only linseed
oil but also walnut oil.

    * Have you got analytical results relating to Dou's binding
        medium?

A number of Dou's paintings show in IRR an underdrawing or a greyish
undermodeling.

    * Do you have complimentary information on this?

Despite the underdrawing or undermodeling a number of pentimenti are
observed in Dou's paintings.

    * Do you have additional information on this?

We shall be grateful for any information on these issues, either in
writing / figures / illustrations / photo's
