Objects Conservator Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) is currently moving much of its activities to the former Launceston Railway Workshops. Many of these railway buildings retain machinery that reflects their former use, including an almost intact Blacksmith's Shop. To assist in conserving this material for public display and interpretation, the museum is seeking an Objects Conservator. The position offers a unique opportunity to participate in the redevelopment of an industrial heritage site into an exciting and entertaining cultural complex. The first stage of the Museum's redevelopment program at the site was the construction of new conservation facilities which are now in operation. The Museum's conservation department currently employs eight staff. This appointment is initially for a 12 month period with a salary range of $29,462 - $33,938, depending upon experience and qualifications. Duties: The successful applicant will assist the objects conservation department in a. developing conservation plans; b. conserving in situ machinery; c. preparing museum objects for new exhibitions; d. carrying out preventative, remedial and maintenance conservation procedures. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of the Senior Objects Conservator and will be expected to manage and work alongside volunteer staff. Experience and Qualifications: Applicants should have a degree in conservation or equivalent experience. Experience of engineering and industrial methods and practices is desirable. The successful applicant requires good written and verbal skills, must be able to work both as part of a team and independently as well as demonstrate an innovative approach to problem solving.
