Objects Conservator
Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery

The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) is currently
moving much of its activities to the former Launceston Railway
Workshops. Many of these railway buildings retain machinery that
reflects their former use, including an almost intact Blacksmith's
Shop. To assist in conserving this material for public display and
interpretation, the museum is seeking an Objects Conservator. The
position offers a unique opportunity to participate in the
redevelopment of an industrial heritage site into an exciting and
entertaining cultural complex.

The first stage of the Museum's redevelopment program at the site
was the construction of new conservation facilities which are now in
operation. The Museum's conservation department currently employs
eight staff.

This appointment is initially for a 12 month period with a salary
range of $29,462 - $33,938, depending upon experience and
qualifications.

Duties: The successful applicant will assist the objects
conservation department in

    a.  developing conservation plans;
    b.  conserving in situ machinery;
    c.  preparing museum objects for new exhibitions;
    d. carrying out preventative, remedial and maintenance
        conservation procedures.

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of the
Senior Objects Conservator and will be expected to manage and work
alongside volunteer staff.

Experience and Qualifications: Applicants should have a degree in
conservation or equivalent experience. Experience of engineering
and industrial methods and practices is desirable. The successful
applicant requires good written and verbal skills, must be able to
work both as part of a team and independently as well as demonstrate
an innovative approach to problem solving.
