Vibration

Bryan Lean inquired about a reference for vibration levels in terms
of fragile media preservation. Although he is correct in stating
that there is a dearth of published conservation science information
on this subject, CCI has published a vibration calculation tool for
packing and shipping, and there is a published paper that was
presented at the AIC annual meeting in Norfolk in 1996. The article
is "Mitigating the Effects of Shock and Vibration", by Paul J.
Marcon, CCI Scientist, in Preservation of Collections: Assessment,
Evaluation, and Mitigation Strategies, it still should be available
from the AIC office. The article describes tests that specifically
addresses the question of HVAC vibrations to potentially brittle art
media. If you have difficulty tracking down the reference, contact
me off-list.
