Preservation Management Institute The biennial Preservation Management Institute (PMI) will be offered next by Rutgers University beginning in Fall 2000. PMI allows you to combine your full-time work with intensive preservation training, and it provides a structure for you to engage in preservation activities at your home institution. Completion of the program leads to a certificate in preservation. Funding for the Preservation Management Institute is still pending, so we can't give you registration fee information just yet. This notice is being posted because many people have asked us to announce dates early for planning purposes. PMI 2000-2001 November 13 - 17 - first weeklong session in central New Jersey Major topics to be covered during this week include * an overview of preservation management * environmental issues of collections * pest control basics * collection conservation issues * preservation microfilming, including a field trip to a lab * how to conduct a preservation survey, including a case study walk-through of a local library * participants will return home at the end of the week and have three months to conduct a survey of their institutions April 23 - 27 - second weeklong session in central New Jersey Major topics to be covered during this week include * the nature of composition and preservation of photographs * the nature of composition and preservation of slides and other audio-visual material * field trip to a conservation lab * exhibition of materials * selection for preservation * disaster planning * participants will return home at the end of the week and have three months to draft a disaster plan August 13 - 17 - final weeklong session in central New Jersey Major topics to be covered during this week include * digital imaging * preservation management--analyzing preservation priorities * field trip to a library with a significant preservation department * funding for preservation--grant writing basics The head instructor for the Preservation Management Institute is Evelyn Frangakis, Preservation Officer of the National Agricultural Library, former head of the Preservation Department at the University of Maryland Libraries, and former Preservation Program Director for the Society of American Archivists (SAA). Other instructors during the three weeks of training include subject experts in fields such as pest control, photographic preservation, and digital imaging.
