Project Conservator for East Asian Storage Conservation Department Philadelphia Museum of Art The Philadelphia Museum of Art is seeking an assistant or associate conservator to survey the condition of and plan improvements for the storage of its East Asian collections, which range from ceramics to swords, decorative bronzes, furniture, lacquerware, carved ivories, shoji screens, and stone sculpture. This survey is planned as a one year project to begin on or shortly after November 1, 1999. The conservator will document the condition of nearly 3800 objects now in storage with the aid of a data entry clerk, staff conservators from objects, paper, costume and textiles, and furniture, and curators. The conservator will be responsible for survey examinations, first aid conservation treatment when appropriate, written reports, monitoring environmental conditions (minimally RH, temperature, light levels), and developing plans for improved storage conditions and space utilization, including case specifications or case design with the aid of the Museum's designer. The candidate will have formal graduate level training in conservation or equivalent education and a minimum of three years professional experience in conservation emphasizing East Asian objects and/or a background in conducting surveys and designing storage.
