Conservator The National Trust The National Trust wishes to appoint a Conservator for its Southern Region, to be based at its office at Polesden Lacey, near Dorking, Surrey. The Southern Region's Historic Buildings Department is primarily responsible for the curatorship of the collections of fine and decorative art and historic objects within its country houses in Surrey, West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. We are now looking for a trained and experienced Conservator for the Region, to specialise in preventive conservation, and to play an important and challenging role in the preservation of historic houses open to the public, and their collections. The Conservator is responsible for preventive conservation in the Region, and is the first line of conservation support. The work includes advising on conservation priorities, training house staff in the care and cleaning of interiors and contents, environmental monitoring, project management (including the preparation of budgets), commissioning of remedial treatments and keeping the regional conservation records. Reporting to the Historic Buildings Representative [Curator], the Conservator is a key member of the Historic Buildings Department. Professional and technical guidance is given by the Trust's Conservation Advisers. You should be educated to degree level, with a professional qualification in conservation and at least 3 years' practical experience. Of equal importance are organisational skills, the ability to promote the interests of conservation and to train, motivate and develop staff at all levels. The salary will be Sterling 18,000 per annum. Applicants must be entitled to take up employment in the EC.
