Pre-Program Conservation Internship
Canterbury Shaker Village

Canterbury Shaker Village, a National Historic Landmark located in
central New Hampshire, is seeking a pre-program conservation intern
beginning fall, 1999 for a minimum duration of 6 months. The intern
will work under the direction of the Chief Curator, a contract
conservator and a consulting decorative arts conservator. The
projects will involve two primary activities, conservation treatment
and storage reorganization. Conservation treatment will include
wooden objects, original 18th and early 19th century painted
finishes, historic linoleum, and original 18th and 19th century
plaster. Storage reorganization will involve creating improved
object housing, examination of objects, data base and digital
photography documentation, superficial cleaning of objects, and
relocation of objects to upgraded storage locations. The internship
will provide an excellent opportunity to gain collections care
experience within a real-world historic site museum, as well as to
be involved with nationally significant cultural artifacts.

Canterbury Shaker Village consists of twenty-five original historic
buildings, dating from 1792-1939, situated on a rolling hilltop
surrounded by 694 acres of fields, woodlots and ponds. The Village
provides an ideal location that is only minutes away from lakes and
trails, and only an hour from the White Mountains and from the sites
and entertainment of Portsmouth, NH.

Applicants should be energetic, well-organized, and possess
excellent dexterity, attention to detail and good judgement.
Training or experience with collections conservation, architectural
conservation and/or storage reorganization is preferred but not
required. Housing will be provided. The internship is open until
filled. Please immediately send a letter of interest, along with a
copy of your resume, and three references to:
