The Los Angeles Preservation Network (LAPNet) and AMIGOS presents: Basic Book and Paper Repair A Two-Day Workshop Occidental College Los Angeles, CA 90041 September 28-29, 1999 This workshop is designed for staff who perform repairs on books and paper in general (non-rare) library collections. Participants will learn about treatment decisions, repair options and supplies, as well as practice a variety of repair techniques. Class size is limited to 20 participants, no more than 2 per institution. Topics include: Page mending and tip-ins Spine and hinge repairs Enclosures Encapsulation Surface cleaning Day 1 Introduction to the Class Fundamentals of Repair: selection, treatment decisions, treatment options, workflow, equipment and supplies Dry cleaning methods Page mending, including discussions and exercises Page tip-in Practicum: Decision making Day 2 Book and Binding Structures Book and Binding Repairs: hinge repairs, spine repairs, including discussions and exercises Protective Enclosures: pamphlet binders, phase boxes, clamshell boxes, mylar jackets and wrappers, encapsulation Discussion: workflow, problem materials, special collections, budgeting Resources LAPNet was established in 1987 to meet the preservation needs of librarians, conservators, archivists and records managers in Los Angeles City and County. It is managed by a Steering Committee drawn from libraries and other record repositories, and aims to serve as a forum of information exchange and to foster the development of preservation and cooperative programs among all the libraries in the area, irrespective of their type and size. The AMIGOS Preservation Service is funded in part by a grant from the Division of Preservation and Access, National Endowment for the Humanities. AMIGOS Bibliographic Council, Inc., based in Dallas, Texas, is a library resource sharing network with over 625 members.
