Subject: A death
I regret to inform you of the death of Helen Diana Burgess. Helen retired from the Canadian Conservation Institute in January, 1998, after extended medical leave. She was one of CCI's longest serving and most successful conservation scientists, known nationally and internationally for her research in the field of cellulose chemistry and degradation. Helen has left an impressive legacy of work and achievement, which will continue to have an impact on the profession and practice of conservation. Those of us who had the privilege to know her as a friend will remember her as a warm and compassionate person, with immense courage in coping with a debilitating illness. A funeral service will be held in Lethbridge, Alberta, later this week. As well, a Memorial Service is being planned for Ottawa later in September. Those who wish to do so may make donations to the Lupus Society. Friends and colleagues who wish to send a message of condolence to the Burgess family may do so by contacting Helen's sister at the following address: Lorraine and Hans Vanderfluit P.O.
