The Newberry Library in Chicago announces two part time, short term
internships:

Book and Paper Conservation Intern
Conservation Services

Reporting to the Book and Paper Conservator, the Book and Paper
Conservation Intern will participate in creating housings,
performing basic treatments and other activities of this small
conservation department.  The complexity of treatments and level of
decision making in other projects will increase as the interns'
skills develop.  Housing and treatment projects will be accompanied
by readings in conservation literature.  This internship is
appropriate for the pre-program conservation student.

Responsibilities: Provide appropriate housings for books, maps,
manuscripts and photographs. These housings will be constructed
after consultation with the Book and Paper Conservator and the
appropriate curator; perform routine conservation treatments such as
surface cleaning, paper mending, humidification and flattening with
minimal supervision; under direct supervision, some more advanced
conservation treatments such as washing, deacidification, hinge and
backing removal may be done; document all treatments performed and
track all objects being housed; participate in disaster planning,
pest management, inspection of incoming materials and other
activities of the conservation department; research topics related
to housing projects and treatment.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, previous conservation experience
desired, written and oral communication skills, excellent hand
skills.

Schedule: Part-time, temporary internship.  Approximately 20 hours a
week for 7 months.

Salary: $7.50 to $9.00 per hour, dependent on qualifications.
