New York University Libraries Collections Conservator Preservation Department Position description: The Collections Conservator is responsible for the physical care of a wide range of research materials in New York University's Elmer Holmes Bobst Library. He/she administrates a comprehensive program to conserve materials held in the general collections, special collections and archives, and performs a variety of treatments designed to stabilize and protect their condition. Approximately 50% of the Collections Conservator's time is spent on treating unique and special collections materials. The Collections Conservator reports to the Head of the Preservation Department and assists in managing and planning the conservation program, including: establishing conservation priorities within the Library; manages and plans treatment methods and procedures for circulating collections, special collections and archives materials; performs treatments primarily on special collections materials; trains and supervises 2 full-time conservation technicians and 3-4 student workers; assists in developing and coordinating special projects; assists in coordinating the Library's environmental monitoring, disaster preparedness plan, and exhibits; and serves as a consultant to other library staff in branch libraries. Qualifications: Extensive knowledge of current conservation principles, practices and procedures; two or more years experience in a conservation program in a research library; experience in treatment decision-making; demonstrated ability to work independently and productively in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; supervisory capabilities; strong analytic and organization skills; ability to work with staff at all levels and with many different backgrounds. Additional experience in conservation of archival collections preferred. Portfolio of work will be required at interview. Salary: Minimum salary of $35,400. Excellent benefits.
