Subject: Publications on photo albums and bookbinding
I now have two additional books of use to conservators, preservation librarians and small shop binders: A Small Book of Practical Sewings by Richard Horton is a bench guide to several major book sewings from 1200 to the present. The book covers link stitches, sewings over tapes, and sewings on sunken or raised, single or double, supports of many materials, including the herringbone stitch and packed stitches. A class of talented amateurs completed all the sewings in the book without my assistance. Historical Photo Albums and Their Structures by Richard Horton, was presented at the AIC joint BPG/PMG session in St. Louis in June of 1999. Based on a structure and mounting survey of over 300 albums at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center in Austin, Texas, this book establishes major historical structural categories for albums, and links them to evolving photographic processes and their marketing. The drawings help curators understand album structures and are sufficiently detailed to allow designers to make new albums using old strategies. Making Albums for Photos and Paper Collectibles by Richard Horton with illustrations by Gary Frost, is still available. It gives instructions for making 8 kinds of album leaves, safe for the materials mounted, and suitable for display, along with production strategies for lab, bindery or small shop.
