The National Library's Conservation Services Section welcomes
applications for the Getty Conservation Internship.  The internship
will make a significant contribution to the development of
professional conservation training in New Zealand and to the
preservation of New Zealand cultural heritage.

The J. Paul Getty Trust is an international cultural and
philanthropic institution devoted to the visual arts and the
humanities that includes an art museum as well as programs for
education, scholarship and conservation.

The Conservation Services Section of the National Library is
responsible for the preservation and conservation of the Library's
heritage collections.  These include books, cartographic
collections, ephemera, manuscripts, prints and drawings, photographs
and sound and music recordings.

The intern will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of the
Cartographic, Drawings and Prints, Ephemera, and Manuscripts and
Archives heritage collections.  Skills will be gained in all
technical aspects of paper conservation, as will a practical
understanding of conservation theory, principles and ethical
considerations.  Research skills will also be gained, through the
study of the work of a prominent NZ artist.

The applicant must:

    *   be in their final year or have graduated within the
        preceding 12 months from a recognised tertiary institution
        with a graduate diploma or degree in a relevant subject;

    *   be able to convince the National Library of their serious
        intent  to pursue a career in paper conservation;

    *   have an understanding of New Zealand cultural values and
        sensitivities;

    *   be able to organise time and resources effectively and to
        work independently;

    *   have effective written and oral communication skills;

    *   have the ability to work professionally as part of the
        Conservation Services team;

    *   provide evidence of proficiency in English;

    *   be entitled to full residency in New Zealand and be able to
        relocate to New Zealand, at their own expense, if not
        already resident.

Preference will be given to:

    *   applicants who are New Zealand citizens or residents who
        have demonstrated a positive commitment to the
        preservation and conservation of their national heritage;

    *   applicants who have demonstrated an interest in and
        awareness   of New Zealand's cultural heritage and
        ethnography;

    *   Conservation graduates with a specialism in works of art on
        paper.

The internship will be for twelve months starting in August 1999
with a remuneration equivalent to approximately NZ$35,000pa.  In
addition, there is provision made for training and travel as
appropriate.  The National Library's standard policies with regard
to annual leave and other benefits will apply.
