Subject: Freezing books
The University of Notre Dame Archives recently accessioned about 10 linear feet of bound audit reports. Upon close inspection the accessioning archivist found the reports to be infested with book lice and a small amount of mold. The reports were put into plastic bags and sent to our conservation lab, where they were placed in a freezer. When we took the reports out of the freezer we found small white flakes on the outside covers. I have questioned a number of people about the flakes, but no one seems to no what they are. Any information that a list member could give would be most appreciated. Matthew E.
