The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens
Exempt, full time, regular staff position.

The Huntington invites applications for the position of Conservator
in the Preservation Department's Conservation Lab for Works on
Paper, Photographs, and Illuminated Manuscripts.  The Conservator
works under the supervision of the Head Conservator.

Essential Functions: The Conservator examines, documents, and treats
works on paper, photographs, and manuscripts, according to the AIC
Code of Ethics. The Conservator also assists with stabilizing items
for exhibitions, uses traditional photography, digital imaging, and
written documentation to record treatments on the computer,
re-houses items and collections as needed, participates in
departmental activities and meetings, monitors environmental
conditions within the Library and maintains records of these data,
and contributes to collections surveys.

Qualifications:

    *   A Bachelors degree is required, with the Masters degree plus
        certificate in Conservation from a recognized graduate
        conservation training program or a Bachelors degree plus a
        combination of equivalent formalized advanced training and
        experience in the conservation of paper, manuscript, and
        photograph materials

    *   A minimum of 2-3 years conservation bench experience in a
        research library, museum, archives, or private practice
        conservation facility

    *   Skill in conservation techniques particularly as they apply
        to the treatment of museum, library, and archives
        paper-based materials, as demonstrated by a portfolio

    *   Computer literacy and research skills

    *   Strong knowledge of art and photographic materials and
        media

    *   An understanding of the theory and practical techniques of
        the conservation and preservation of paper, parchment, and
        photographic materials

    *   Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail

    *   Excellent communication and teamwork skills

scholarly research in British and American history, art, and
literature, combined with public art galleries and botanical
