Edge Tools for Conservators West Dean College, West Sussex October 5-7-1999 Tutor: Bernard Allen. A two-day practical course for conservators in the making and sharpening of knives and tools with the chance to explore a range of different techniques and equipment. Through lectures and practical demonstrations conservators will gain experience and understanding of different types of steel and the correct techniques for creating and maintaining a sharp edge on their tools. Course participants are invited to bring their own tools to work on, and all students should have the opportunity to make a knife. The excellent workshop facilities at West Dean will help students gain a thorough grounding to a very high standard in this vital aspect of conservators' work. To make the most of time available, the course will begin with a lecture on Tuesday evening, and will include an extra workshop session on Wednesday evening.
