Architectural Drawings: Their History and Preservation Instructor: Lois Olcott Price, Conservator of Library Collections Winterthur Museum, Winterthur, Delaware Friday and Saturday, July 16-17, 1999 Registration fee: $120.00 Held at: Canadian Architectural Archives, University of Calgary The Canadian Architectural Archives has over 184 metres of textual records and 500,000+ architectural drawings. The holdings date from 1905 to the present. The bulk of the collections consist of working drawings, i.e. prints and blueprints on various media, and project files from architectural firms. Program: Day 1 - Slides and lecture discussing development of architectural drawing in North America and changing choice of supports and media. Examination of examples with particular reference to tracing papers, tracing cloths, typical drawing papers, evidence of drafting and copying techniques, inks, coloured media, original mounting/presentation formats, and typical deterioration patterns. Discussion of treatments, housing and reformatting options. Survey techniques. Day 2 -Slides and lecture discussing development of photo-reproduction processes, their pattern of use and their chemistry. Examination of examples with particular reference to identifying different processes, influence of support on media, and typical deterioration patterns. Discussion of treatment, housing and reformatting options. Participants have an opportunity to present their own case histories, problems and questions or tips for the preservation of architectural drawings.
