Aug. 29 - Sep. 3, 1999 Issues and Approaches in Upholstery Conservation Course Leaders: Kate Gill, Senior conservator/lecturer specialising in the conservation of textiles and upholstery, The Textile Conservation Centre. Norbert Gutowski, Conservation/Restoration Antique Furniture Tutor, West Dean College. The aim of this course is to bring together various specialists and practitioners involved in the care, interpretation and preservation of upholstered furniture for the purpose of aiding communication across the various disciplines, by providing a common ground of knowledge and vocabulary. The sharing of concerns and priorities between participants will facilitate decision-making in the preservation of important upholstered furniture. The course will comprise of a series of demonstrations and lectures, practical sessions and case histories, outside visits and handouts will include the following: * the history and current direction of upholstery conservation and restoration treatments * upholstery styles, profiles, structures and materials * degradation * preventive conservation Practical sessions will include the examination, interpretation and recording of information revealed on a series of partially stripped chairs.
