The course 'Examination of Historic paints and Wallpapers' as listed in the 1999 Professional Development Programme of International Academic Projects has been shortened and will now run for 2 days--28th and 29th June 1999 in central London. The tutors are Helen Hughes (Architectural Paint Researcher for English Heritage) and Allyson McDermott (Conservator of Fine and Decorative Arts). The price is now 175 pounds. The programme for the two days includes: Historic Paints The 18th century Print room at Woodhall Park. An overview of this important multi disciplinary conservation project will introduce the options and approaches available to both client and conservator. The new English Heritage Guidelines for the commissioning of Architectural Paint Research Know your building. Understanding the history, uses and context of historic buildings and their interiors. An important first step when commissioning research and conservation. Case Studies and practical session including examination of cross sections Historic Wallpapers The important role of original wallpapers within the historic interior Historical overview of design and manufacture Conserve or reproduce? A discussion of options available. Case studies include : Home House, Uppark, Petworth, Kinlochmoidart, Hackney Empire, Ickworth Know your wallpaper. The methods and materials of manufacture. Identifying and dating wallpapers and / or fragments. Case studies including Home House and Kew Palace Practical session : Polarising microscopy and tests.
