This is in response to Jerry Shiner's inquiry about the acidic components of wood as storage elements. In addition to the replies concerning the effects of these degradation agents on metals, you might look at the Elisabeth West Fitzhugh and Rutherford J. Gettens article in Science and Archaeology, 1971:91-102, "Calclacite and other efflorescent salts on objects stored in Wooden museum cases". Many of these examples concern natural history collects, mineral, shell etc. Niccolo Caldararo Director and Chief Conservator Conservation Art Service *** Conservation DistList Instance 12:88 Distributed: Tuesday, May 18, 1999 Message Id: cdl-12-88-004 ***Received on Friday, 14 May, 1999
