Pre-Program Preventive Conservation Internship
Canterbury Shaker Village

Canterbury Shaker Village, a National Historic Landmark located in
central New Hampshire, is seeking a pre-program intern beginning
early summer, 1999 for a minimum of six months. The intern will
work under the direction of the Chief Curator, a contract
conservator and a consulting conservator. The projects will involve
routine collections maintenance, cyclical collections maintenance,
creation of a housekeeping procedures manual, environmental
monitoring, collections storage reorganization, and collections
documentation, including digital photography and data base
development. The internship will provide an excellent opportunity to
gain collections care experience within a real-world historic site
museum, as well as to be involved with nationally significant
cultural artifacts. Housing will be provided and a small stipend is
possible.

Canterbury Shaker Village consists of twenty-five original historic
buildings, dating from 1792-1939, situated on a rolling hilltop
surrounded by 694 acres of fields, woodlots and ponds. The
collections represent a rich continuum of 200 years of Shaker life
and include furniture, household wares, agricultural implements,
medical instruments, textiles, prints/paintings, and the personal
effects of the last Canterbury Shakers. The Village presents an
ideal location that is only minutes away from lakes and trails, and
only an hour from the White Mountains and from the sites and
entertainment of Portsmouth, NH.

Applicants should be energetic, well-organized, and possess
excellent dexterity, attention to detail and good judgement.
Training or experience with preventive conservation, housekeeping
procedures, collections documentation, and/or storage reorganization
is preferred but not required. Please immediately send a letter of
interest, along with a copy of your resume, and three references to:
