training between West Dean College, English Heritage, The Weald and
Downland Open Air Museum.

Course Leader: John Ashurst, former Principal Architect with English
Heritage, Professor of Building Conservation at Bournemouth
University and joint author of the seminal book series Practical
Building Conservation, Architectural Consultant in Historic Building
Repair and Conservation.

Principal Tutor: Colin Burns, a mason, former English Heritage
Senior Training Officer at Fort Brockhurst Building Conservation
Training Centre, with extensive practical experience of the
conservation of historic masonry.. see above.

A detailed study of traditional mortars, including investigation and
basic analytical techniques, and the recognition and diagnosis of
typical failures. Appropriate mortars for a range of masonry
conditions, exposures and durabilities are described, and techniques
including mixing, placing and curing; also specifications and
costs for remedial works.
