Call for papers--preventive conservation

From: Judith A. Logan <judy_logan>
Date: Thursday, April 29, 1999
The Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) will be meeting January
4-9, 2000, in Quebec City. Papers are invited for the following
conservation session:

"Preventive conservation is defined as "All actions taken to
retard deterioration and prevent damage to cultural property
through the provision of optimal conditions of storage, use and
handling" (Canadian Association for Conservation, Code of
Ethics). Conservation of artifacts is often associated with
interventive treatments, such as electrolysis, consolidation,
and cleaning. In reality, these actions are only done when
absolutely necessary. Decisions must be made whether to
intervene, the purpose, degree and nature of that intervention,
and what change is acceptable as a result. Careful handling,
recording, non-destructive analysis, and optimum storage will
provide information and protect the majority of archaeological
material. Preventive conservation is fundamental to the
    management of archaeological collections."

This session will focus on issues around the development of
conservation strategies, and will investigate the role of preventive
conservation as well as minimal treatment for archaeological
materials. Papers are invited that describe case studies and
situations where decisions about conservation treatment,
collections care and preservation have been addressed.

Abstracts are due June 1, 1999.
