Digitization Specialist, Preservation Department

The University of Chicago Library invites applications for the
position of Digitization Specialist.  This position, reporting to
the Projects Librarian in the Preservation Department, manages daily
operations of the newly established Digitization Unit responsible
for converting library materials to digital form.  Digitization
activities involve the conversion of a wide variety of resources in
original formats including text, graphics, audio, and video and
incorporate individually selected titles and larger projects.  The
Digitization Specialist collaborates with Preservation managers, and
other staff to develop and implement conversion services and to
support retrospective digitization projects that form part of the
University of Chicago Library's broader digital library initiatives.
The Digitization Specialist hires, trains, and supervises grant
supported and student staff; ensures adherence to relevant industry
and local standards; ensures quality control; contributes to the
development of conversion guidelines and best practices, and to
project and program planning; and manages contracts with commercial
vendors.

Requirements:  BA.  Background in photography, digital imaging
technologies, or equivalent. Demonstrated expertise in the creation
and management of digital information.  Supervisory experience
required.  Excellent organizational skills, ability to establish
priorities and achieve goals, plan and direct workflow, manage a
process from design to completion, analyze and solve problems, and
initiate and adapt to change.  Strong oral and written communication
skills, ability to work independently and effectively in a
collaborative setting, demonstrated ability to prepare reports and
procedural documentation.  Sensitivity to the handling issues of
library materials. Competence in basic computer skills including
Windows 97/Windows NT, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and other
digital conversion software.  Expertise with color calibration and
color management systems preferred.
