Subject: Chicago Area Conservation Group (CACG)
The Chicago Area Conservation Group announces their April 1999 meeting. The CACG is pleased to invite you to the Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum to hear Craig Deller present "The Conservation Of the Historic Dearborn Telescope" Thursday, April 22, 1999 at 6:00 PM The Historic Dearborn Telescope, created in 1864, was the largest refractor telescope in the world. In the Adler collection since 1930, the wooden surface had undergone numerous surface treatments that led to masking the walnut burl veneer that covered the tube. This talk will examine the history of the telescope, how it came to Chicago, and the conservation treatment including examination, treatment design and the resulting original surface recovery. Join us and also enjoy a showing of "Journey to Infinity" in the world's only StarRider Theater, a virtual reality environment where the audience controls the computer generated images. Parking is available in the Park District lot south of the building for $7.00 or there is meter parking along the street in front of the building. Please enter in the south entrance of the new addition. Refreshments will be served.
