Preservation education

It was good to see that David Gracy will be serving as interim
director of the University of Texas, Austin Conservation and
Preservation Program in the School of Library and Information
Studies. It is important that the program continue to graduate the
fine students that it does, and to carry on a long tradition of
preservation education.

There are some other programs, however, which also education
preservation professionals at the graduate level. The University of
Pittsburgh School of Information Science has been graduating MIS
students for careers in preservation, both in libraries and in
archives, for ten years. There are four full time faculty members
teaching in archives, books arts and preservation offering students
an opportunity to choose a number of different career options
related to rare books, archives, records management and
preservation. Our students are working in a wide variety of
institutions where preservation expertise is required. It is clear
that different approaches to preservation education are healthy and
effective.
