Transferring painting

I have a student, Claudia Reichold, doing a research thesis on the
structural transfer of paintings.  Is there anyone who can give her
some information on practical experiences?  She is collecting
information on the transfer from wood panel to canvas, but also
wonders if--due to structural or other technical
considerations--there is anyone who has had experience in separating
and then transferring a canvas painted on both sides? (ie: making
two paintings out of one.  She realizes that ethics certainly enters
into this type of intervention, but hypothesizes that perhaps out of
necessity, this type of operation may have been performed, and
wonders about techniques used and problems encountered).
