Subject: Exhibition lighting for natural history collections
Linda Thomas inquired about published light level recommendations for natural history objects materials. I would suggest looking in Thomson's "The Museum Environment, 2nd Edition", which has much of the basic information on this subject that conservators still refer to when developing guidelines and standards for their institutions. There is also a recent publication from IES (RP-30-96) "Museum and Art Gallery Lighting: A Recommended Practice", IESNA, 120 Wall Street, New York, NY 10005, 1996, that you might want to look at. You might also want to contact the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) and obtain their publication on the principles of conservation for natural history collections. Let me know if you need further information on this. Paul S.
