Paintings Conservator The Durban Art Gallery South Africa The Durban Art Gallery is seeking applicants for the permanent position of paintings conservator. The gallery's collection consists of European and South African paintings as well as ceramics, sculpture and works of art on paper. The successful applicant would be responsible for: the conservation examination, maintenance and treatment of paintings in the collection; continual monitoring of conditions in the public galleries and in the storage areas; the training of staff in the safe handling, storage, exhibition and presentation of paintings; the supervision of the movement of paintings; and the maintenance of the paintings conservation studio to the highest museological standard possible. Qualifications: Applicants should have a degree or equivalent academic qualification followed by a recognized qualification in paintings conservation and preferably two to three years professional experience. Other essential qualifications include good manual dexterity; excellent organizational skills; good communication skills and the ability to work effectively and efficiently without supervision.
