William R. Leisher Memorial Fellowship for Research and Treatment of
Modern Paintings
National Gallery of Art

The painting conservation department will host a one-year
fellowship, renewable for a second year, commencing in the fall of
1999 and including a $23,000 stipend. The fellowship will be devoted
to conservation examination, maintenance, and treatment of paintings
in the twentieth-century collection and research on contemporary
artists' materials. A significant portion of the fellowship will be
directed toward completing an inventory of the collection of modern
artists' materials. The fellow will be encouraged to produce a
publishable paper. Lectures, symposia, and informal discussions
contribute to the fellowship program, in addition to the significant
resources of the Gallery, including the library, the photographic
archives, and the scientific research department.

Eligibility: Graduates from recognized training programs or
candidates with equivalent training will be considered. Applicants
should have no more than five years of work experience. A proven
